Glaucoma Awareness

Greetings Brothers of the Tenacious Thirteenth International District

I pray all is well. In keeping with the mission of the medical/health committee that of keeping the brothers in the thirteenth district informed of pertinent health initiatives. Brother Byron Biscoe, DDR (Caribbean) has agreed to be the guest presenter for our moth of April medical/health district symposium. The topic will be on Glaucoma. According to the data, Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the United States. But half of people with glaucoma don’t know they have it. Glaucoma has no early symptoms. The only way to check for it is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam. There’s no cure for glaucoma, but starting treatment as early as possible can help stop vision loss.

Anyone can get glaucoma, but some people are at higher risk, including people who:

  • Are over age 60
  • Are Black/African American and over age 40
  • Are Asian American
  • Are Hispanic/Latino
  • Have a family history of glaucoma

The Thirteenth District medical/health committee will host its Glaucoma Awareness symposium on April 6, 2024 at 12:00pm EST. This symposium will support the National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP), encouraging everyone at higher risk for glaucoma to get a dilated eye exam. It’s the best way to protect their vision! Again, we look forward to having everyone join in on this noteworthy event. It just might save your eyesight or that of someone you love.
