National Mentoring Month

During the month of January 2024, Brothers of the 13th International District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. promotes National Mentoring Month with the annual heme: “Uplifting Youth Around the Globe”. The purpose of this event is threefold:

(1) Raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms

(2) Recruit individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have waiting lists of young people

(3) Promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their constituents in mentoring

The National Mentoring Month began 22 years ago and was started by MENTOR National and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. It has received strong support from the U.S. President and members of Congress. Other well-known supporters include the late Maya Angelou, Clint Eastwood, late Senator John McCain, Quincy Jones, late General Colin L. Powell, Cal Ripken Jr., late Bill Russell (MENTOR founding board member), and Usher. In addition, former President Obama in 2016 proclaimed the month of January as National Mentoring Month. His office shared a National Mentoring Month press release highlighting the crucial role that mentors play in young people’s lives. Last year, United States Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona played a key role in the event.

Today, sponsors of the National Mentoring Month include: The Harvard School of Public Health, Highland Street Foundation, and the National Basketball Association (NBA Cares).

The 13th International District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. takes great pride in kicking off 2024 with National Mentoring Month. We encourage fathers, parents, school teachers, coaches, and mentors to continue inspiring and motivating our youth in reaching their goals and aspirations.
